Reaction With Water

Concept Explanation

Reaction With Water

Reaction of metal with water:

Different metals react differently with water . It depends on the reactivity of the metal .Some metals react with water at ordinary temperature, some reacts only with hot water, while some metals react with the steam. In each case their occur formation of metal oxide and release of hydrogen gas.

Most metals react with water to produce a metal hydroxide or metal oxide and hydrogen gas. If  reaction takes place at ordinary temperature, metal hydroxide is formed and if reaction takes place at a higher temperature, metal oxide is formed.

Metal + water rightarrow Metal ;hydroxide + Hydrogen; gas                          Or

Metal + water rightarrow Metal ;oxide + Hydrogen ;gas

Metals Like Potassium, Sodium and CalciumThese metals decompose water at ordinary temperature as they are highly reactive.

2K(s) + 2H_2O(l)rightarrow 2KOH(aq) + H_2(g)

2Na(s)+2H_2O(l)rightarrow 2NaOH(aq)+H_2(g)

The reaction of sodium and potassium with water is so violent and exothermic that the hydrogen gas produced catches fire immediately.
